Jazz Vocalist Mari Toussaint Honored With Jazz Impact Award
The Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium (CBJC) bestowed the 2004 'Jazz Impact
Award' on jazz vocalist Mari Toussaint at their fifth annual Jazz Festival
Awards Ceremony held March 31, 2004 at Sugar Hill Supper Club. Upon
presenting the award CBJC Chairperson, Jitu Weusi specified the many
contributions Ms. Toussaint has made to the Brooklyn jazz scene.
Mari Toussaint has appeared in most of the jazz venues in Brooklyn, NY as
well as venues nationally and internationally. Her first jazz gig was as
a Grandassa Model with saxophonist Bobby Capers. She has since worked
with master jazz musicians such as Carlos Garnett, Roland Alexander and
Bill Saxton. She recently represented the East Coast jazz scene at the
annual Concert for World Peace in San Jose, California.
Ms Toussaint reaches into her Haitian background and performs an annual
concert 'Jazz Meets The Haitian Community' whose purpose is to foster the
integration of the Haitian community into the mainstream community through
the medium of jazz. She strongly advocates for the perpetuation of jazz
and as such facilitates a clinic for youth that encourages its
appreciation.
Her CD release Presenting Mari Toussaint: The Haitian Jazz Sensation
is available locally. Please visit her at

Ancient Traditions –
Contemporary Forms
The Embassy of Ghana has agreed to
host Ancient Traditions – Contemporary Forms an exhibition which explores
the innate similarities in the traditions of Ghanaian and African-American
cultures expressed through paintings, sculptures and masks by contemporary
Ghanaian and African-American artists.
The concept of the exhibition is based on the theory of atavistic memory
defined as: relating to or displaying the recurrence of cultural or
genetic features that has been absent for several generations. The ancient
traditions of Ghana have been absent from the African-American experience,
and yet they are reflected in their work. This exhibition will compare the
expressions of these traditions by Ghanaian painters and sculptors and the
innate similarities found in the artistic interpretation of
African-American artists.
A catalogue will be created to serve as a historic document to the
exhibition. It will feature the artists’ works, biographies, and comments
by art curators, historians and art appraisers.
The exhibition will serve as a platform to:
1. present Ghana’s rich culture and traditions as interpreted through its
artist,
2. provide exposure for Ghanaian artists,
3. encourage cultural exchange and awareness for the Ghanaian and
African-American artists and the general public,
4. solidify the relationship between Ghanaians and African-Americans as a
community.
Myrtis Bedolla, President of Creative Artisans and Dr. Kwaku Ofori-Ansa of
Howard University are the exhibition curators. Artists who wish to
participate in the event will be asked to provide a biography and samples
of their artwork. The artwork will be made available for sell during the
exhibition. Once a work of art has been selected for the exhibition the
artist will receive an Artist Agreement which details the arrangement
between the artist and Creative Artisans.
The event will be held in September 2004. The time and date for the
artists’ reception is to be determined.
Artists who wish to participate in the exhibition may submit samples of
their work in the following formats:
1. Slides
2. Photographs
3. CD Rom
4. JPG File (via the internet as an email attachment – send to:
ZIMSTONE_ART@YAHOO.COM) In the SUBJECT line of the email please state:

OBITUARIES
| Artist Noah Purifoy Joins
the Ancestors
Noah Purifoy, internationally renowned
assemblage sculptor, died on March 5 at his home in Joshua Tree, age 86.
A founding member of the California Arts Council, Purifoy was the first
director of the Watts Towers Art Center in the early 1960s. Since 1989,
he has continued to create an outdoor art museum of sculptures in the high
desert of Joshua Tree for public participation and enjoyment.
The Noah Purifoy
Foundation, established in 1998 to preserve Noah’s work in Joshua Tree,
will continue to move forward and ensure his legacy as an artist, mentor,
visionary and creative genius.
He is survived by his
sisters, Mrs. Ophelia Jeffries, Mrs. Mary Lewis, Mrs. Lucille McDaniel,
and Ms. Esther Purifoy, of Cleveland, Ohio.
Attached is a poem Noah
wrote in 1966, a poem that is guding us during a time of enormous loss.
A BOOK FLOWN
These fragmentations only
mean that
I am fragmented;
that as I symbolize what you say and agree
can I then leave you
to set these lines in order,
assemble them into a book
and, by the first strong winds,
permit its leaves to be torn from its cover.
Let them fly high
and, like leaves light
into the lap of the Universe;
separate of and by themselves
within, without, complete, yet incomplete.

A Salute to Dr. Jeff R. Donaldson
Printmaker, Painter, Educator
|
Dear Art Enthusiasts,
As we progress
through another historical year in the arts, I regret to inform you
of the loss of a true pioneer in the African American art realm....
Dr. Jeff R. Donaldson. His passing will be felt by
everyone, and his contributions as an artist will forever shine.
This true legend opened many doors, which were permanently
parted for many artists to follow. May his great legacy continue to
enlighten. NCA and the art world mourn the death of former Dean of
the College of Fine Arts at Howard University, Dr. Jeff R.
Donaldson. There will be a memorial service on Friday, March 12th,
11 AM at Rankin Chapel, Howard University. |

organized the OBAC Visual Arts Workshop, creators of the original "Wall of
Respect" in Chicago and was a founder of the AFRICOBRA artist guild): book
illustrations: (Gwendolyn Brooks, Haki Madhubuti, Houston Baker, et. al.);
20 album covers for Jazz-America Marketing where he served as art
director; and numerous commissions, such as the Hoyt W. Fuller portrait at
Cornell University.
Donaldson's work and career development appear in
the Thames and Hudson (London) publication, Black Culture and Art
in the 20th century by Richard Powell. His essay "Ten in Search of A
Nation" is included in Selz and Stiles, 1996 Theories and Documents of
