The Newark Museum hosted the traveling exhibition "Narratives of African American Art and
Identity" the collection of the world's leading curator, collector and scholar of works by African Americans, Dr.
David C, Driskell. The exhibition, which presents 100 works of art by 65 African American artists, opened with a
grand reception attended by the "who's who" of art in the Northeastern United States, and a good representation of
international guests. The exhibition, organized and circulated by The Art Gallery at the University of Maryland,
College Park from Driskell's private collection, was curated by Dr. Juanita M, Holland, Assistant Professor, Department
of Art History and Archaeology, University of Maryland. The collection spans some 125 years and represents
most of the key African American artists of the past century,
including Edward Bannister, Aaron Douglas, Norman Lewis, Jacob Lawrence, Romare Bearden,
Elizabeth Catlett, Alma Thomas and Sam Gilliam among others. The Museum also collaborated with
Aljira, A Center for Contemporary Art, in presenting a companion exhibition, Echoes: The Art of David C,
Driskell, at The Paul Robeson Gallery, Rutgers University.
