NCA Marks 48th Anniversary, Olatunji Drums of Passion Tribute

NCAnewyork will celebrate its 48th anniversary with a tribute to former board member, the late-great Nigerian drummer and cultural group leader and teacher, Babatunde Olatunji on the occasion of the 48th anniversary of the release of his “Drums Of  Passion” album that tremendously impacted the music industry and still is remembered as one of the most popular albums displaying African culture. The event will take place Saturday, April 21st from 7 – 11pm, and will feature a performance by the Olatunji Dance and Drum Society, along with artist, poet, novelist, and owner of Manhattan’s Rush Arts Gallery and Brooklyn’s Corridor Gallery, Def Poetry Jam  producer, and NCAnewyork Board Chairman, Danny Simmons reading selections from his latest book, I Dreamed My People Were Calling But I Couldn't Find My Way Home, which was just published by Jessica Care Moore’s, Moore Black Press in January, 2007.  Also featured will be a FashionArt showcase by Brooklyn’s popular and noted Africentric fashion designer Brenda-Brunson-Bey with selections from her Tribal Truths Collection and designer Khalil and his Threads by Khalil and bridal wear by Queen Belquis.. Additionally popular poets DuEwa Frazier, Derrick Cross and George Edward Tait will offer spoken word presentations. An added attraction will be Afro-Brazilian pianist and conductor Samuel Kardos. There will also be presentations of NCAnewyork visual artists illustrating a history of NCA.

NCAnewyork produces a weekly television show, Black Arts & Culture USA, which airs 624 times a year on seven channels in New York, Mt. Vernon, Brooklyn, Washington, DC and Atlanta, GA. Black Arts & Culture has been the bedrock of the NCAnewyork Department of Communications & Education. It is the vehicle that NCA uses to accomplish there mission to “preserve, promote and develop” our culture. Executive Director Kwame Brathwaite, has traveled to many cities to videotape activities that are of importance to the arts. Among the more than 300 one-hour and half-hour shows are such important annual events such as the annual James A. Porter Colloquium at Howard University, The National Black Fine Arts Show in New York, the annual Dedicators Scholarship Luncheon and Art Exhibition, the Nubian Women’s Art Circle Youth Scholarship Awards fundraisers, The David C. Driskell annual lecture in Maryland, Philadelphia’s October Gallery Expo as well as exhibitions at Spelman College, Clark Atlanta University, Hammons House, and the Smithsonian’s Anacosta Museum in D.C., Chuma Gallery in Charleston, The National Black Writer’s Conference at Medgar Evers, the International African Arts Festival, the annual Tribute to the Ancestors in Coney Island, and the annual Art Off The Main – Caribbean, African and Latino exhibitions in New York, among others.

The event will take place at the spacious Gallery at 210 Front Street at the South Street Seaport, located on the corner of Beeckman St. in Manhattan, and will benefit the National Conference of Artists New York and the Seaport District Cultural Association.
