Joan D. Banks, beloved member of the National Conference of Artists New York, former graphic artist, and fabric designer, made her transition to become a beloved ancestor on Saturday, June 24, 2006 at 11:30 PM. A linguist who spoke fluent Spanish, French and Italian, Joan
edited the NCAnewyork newsletter and wrote The Art Scene, and various artist profiles.
Joan was known to the NCA news staff as “the answer Lady”. She knew not only the well known artists, but the emerging artists as well. She knew all of the important galleries and gallery owners that dealt in Black art and would hardly ever have to look up their addresses or
telephone numbers. It was all in her head. If there was an error in spelling or grammar in the newsletter, it was because in haste, we didn’t pass the copy to Joan. She would catch everything.
Joan was a regular volunteer at the Brooklyn Museum working mainly in the Education department, but also served in other areas.
Banks was an avid tennis player, skier and bicyclist that enjoyed the outdoors and travel, and played up until a several months ago, before catching the flu late last year. That flu probably weakened her and triggered a series of conditions that caused her heart to fail.
Born August 14, 1932 in Plainfield, New Jersey, to Japheth Banks and DeLossie Powell-Banks, she is survived by one brother, Royal Banks, a nephew Raymond and niece Charlotte J. Banks. |
